Ubuntu & Elementary OS developers are planning to add age verification functionality, in a way which impacts all Linux users, to comply with a new California law.
Ubuntu's Vice President on re-writing everything in Rust: "do it by default with no apology", despite acknowledging that users will "see some breakage".
"Until we have a better plan, we modified our license to exclude residents of California from using MidnightBSD for desktop use, effective January 1, 2027."

A new California Law (AB-1043), signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, requires all Operating Systems (from macOS to FreeBSD) to implement age verification, at the system level, this year.
"Age Attestation on Computing Devices" (Colorado State Bill 26-051) would require age verification on all Operating Systems (both Open Source and proprietary), with fines for violations.
