CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service is as critical to public health as it is revered.

More than 1,000 employees at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been put on notice less than 24 hours after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took office.

The affected employees are supposed to receive four weeks paid administrative leave, a federal official said, adding that it wasn't clear when individual workers would receive notice.

As many as 1,300 probationary employees at CDC are being let go, at the direction of the Trump administration. The cuts represent around 10% of the agency's workforce.

More than 1 in 10 of the health agency's workers are being let go, including an entire new class of CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service officers.
