Soldiers in Guinea-Bissau have seized power, marking another military takeover in West Africa. The coup followed a contested presidential election where both President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and his main opponent claimed victory.
ECOWAS delegation has arrived in Guinea-Bissau on Monday, as the military government which seized power in the country banned all demonstrations, strikes and activities regarded as threat to peace and stability.
The takeover was the 11th successful coup d'etat in Africa since just 2020, and the latest destabilizing event in a country long plagued by governance challenges.
In a resolution adopted by the AU Peace and Security Council on Friday, the organization reiterated it has "zero tolerance on unconstitutional changes of government."
