Latest Justin Fields Injury Update

Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reported that Fields missed Thursday’s practice and the team confirmed that he will not be playing in the game. Fields suffered an abdomen injury in their Week 15 loss to the Philadephia Eagles.

Fields suffered the injury while rushing for eight yards in the second quarter. For Week 16, third-string quarterback Kyle Allen will back up Russell Wilson.

Before coming to Pittsburgh, Allen was Josh Allen’s backup with the Buffalo Bills in 2023. Kyle Allen has only had one snap this season against the Dallas Cowboys, completing a 19-yard pass.

The Steelers have been one of the surprises of the NFL, leading their division with a 10-4 record and cruising to the playoffs. But they received a reality check when they went up against the 12-2 Eagles and now have to face the Ravens without an experienced backup, which could spell trouble.

Tomlin’s usage of their backup QB has been unique. He has come into the game during some pivotal moments. The Steelers head coach was asked earlier in the season about Fields and the packages he is featured in.

“It’s a component of what we do,” Tomlin said. “I’ve been pretty clear about that.” Tomlin added that Fields is a “viable and capable dude” and said that he’s the type of player that opponents need to be aware of.

“When we use it or how much we utilize it will be dependent on plans week to week based on the opponent,” Tomlin said. “I don’t know if this week will be reflective of what you saw last week, to be quite honest with you. Just know that it certainly is a component of what we do and a component of every plan.”

Although Russell Wilson has played well most of the season, it has to make the Steelers head coach a bit uncomfortable knowing they are one injury away from Wilson being knocked out. That has to be a scary thought for Steelers fans.

The Steelers will also be without the services of wide receiver George Pickens and potentially T.J. Watt, although he says he plans to play.

“We’ll see Sunday — or Saturday I guess I should say — but I felt pretty good this week,” Watt said Thursday in regard to his recovery from an ankle injury. “Obviously it’s a short week but felt pretty good.”

A win against the Ravens clinches the AFC North for the Steelers and even keeps them in contention (albeit very small) for the AFC No. 1 seed.
